It has come to our attention that the City of New Orleans is arbitrarily changingthe formula set forth inR.S. 11:2218(J)by applying a reduction factor. What does that do? It, we believe illegally, reduces the amount of leave that you may convert to retirement credit. Additionally, it’s our understanding that the City of New Orleans is no longer presenting leave conversion as an option for NOPD officers, even though the City has irrevocably elected to make this benefit available.
If you are an NOPD officer andwant to convert your unused annual and sickleave to retirement credit, then you should consult with your own personalattorney immediately. MPERS will not provide you with service credit for converted leave unless and until your employer pays the full amount due to MPERS, as calculated by MPERS’s actuary.
